Zombie- FELA, Afrika and Hayti

April 3, 2010
It’s Good Friday…I’m trying to stay positive and find the goodness in it without being a cynic and a skeptic.  I am trying to love and move with the goodness of the energy of the universe and the spirits of the dead of Hayti.  Yes!  Our declaration has been found and our name is HAYTI!  So much about HAYTI is spilling open…
This earthquake is an opening; it’s a passageway to guide us back to the course that we left off on in 1804.  This important document being found is a major breakthrough and I cannot help but to think that timing is kinetic, and not unplanned.  For that I am grateful, and not cynical, and trusting, and open.
I sit here working away, on a Friday, a Good Friday evening, listening to Fela’s Zombie.  I couldn’t help but think of our people in HAYTI.  How they have been beaten down time and time again to only know what it is to survive.  People are afraid to protest.  They are afraid to denounce and demand.  They only know how to be a community, and so I am grateful to support communities and local Haytians to do more than survive.
Listening to Zombie I realize that the docile, beat em’ down, soldier their neighborhood strategies is only to take a human being of Godly proportions to the level of a zombie.  The soldiers rolling around with a finger on the trigger, on every block, in every neglected area is a fear campaign.  The beauty of this, as I listen to these words and reflect on the earthquake: the scene of early January, the smell, the energy- I can’t help but think of our revolution being won in January, and the bones of those still lying under rubble and the things that I have seen with my own eyes in the communities where cameras and journalists did not bear witness.  And then I think of the cultural change, and the globalization and the whippings that Haytian people have been enduring for so long.  Perhaps this document was found, and this moment’s foundation is bringing it all to a full circle. Mwen swete (I wish).
Here are the lyrics to Zombie…would love to hear your thoughts and interpretations…

Zombie lyrics by Fela Kuti
Zombie-o, zombie (Zombie-o, zombie)Zombie-o, zombie (Zombie-o, zombie)
Zombie no go go, unless you tell am to go (Zombie)
Zombie no go stop, unless you tell am to stop (Zombie)
Zombie no go turn, unless you tell am to turn (Zombie)
Zombie no go think, unless you tell am to think (Zombie)
Tell am to go straight
A joro, jara, joro
No break, no job, no sense
A joro, jara, joro
Tell am to go kill
A joro, jara, joro
No break, no job, no sense
A joro, jara, joro
Tell am to go quench
A joro, jara, joro
No break, no job, no sense
A joro, jara, joro
Go and kill! (Joro, jaro, joro)
Go and die! (Joro, jaro, joro)
Go and quench! (Joro, jaro, joro)
